Oven Baked Beef Puff Pastry Twists
Some of my favorite recipes begin with a completely ordinary ingredient that needs a little bit of attention before it hits the oven. Puff pastry is one such ingredient. Got a package in the freezer and all of a sudden you’ve got the beginning of an impressive appetizer, snack or quick dinner idea.
These Oven Baked 4-Ingredient Beef Puff Pastry Twists were created from just such a moment.
I had meant to make a real dinner one evening, but the day slipped away. It was late in the afternoon and I’d changed my plans twice already. I didn’t feel like getting take-out and definitely didn’t feel like spending an hour making something complicated.
I opened the refrigerator and saw that there was some cooked ground beef leftover from last nite. I had a puff pastry sheet in the freezer. I also had some shredded cheddar cheese and an egg.
That was all.
Four components.
I decided to combine them and see what happens. I defrosted the puff pastry and spread the seasoned beef on half of it, then added cheese, folded the pastry over, and cut it into strips. I then just twisted each strip a little bit and placed them on a baking sheet.
I painted the tops with beaten egg, and put the tray in the oven. I wasn’t sure what to expect. Then the smell began.
The buttery pastry was already filling the kitchen with the unmistakable smell of the bakery. A few minutes later, the cheese began bubbling in the layers, and the tops turned glossy and golden. That’s when everyone became interested in what I was doing, all of a sudden.
My family came into the kitchen one at a time, asking, ‘What’s in the oven?’ I took out the tray and let the twists cool for a few minutes before serving. The first one was gone almost as soon as it arrived. Another. Then. Before I knew it, we’d eaten half the tray standing around the kitchen counter. I realized this was more than an outlet for leftover beef. They could easily be a recipe worth making from scratch.
I’ve used these twists as a party appetizer, an after-school snack, a casual lunch, and a quick addition to family dinners ever since. They always look a lot more complicated than they really are and catch the eye.
If you are looking for easy beef appetizers, puff pastry recipes, ground beef recipes, quick party food, easy finger foods, high protein snack ideas or easy family dinner recipes, you should try these crispy beef twists.
Why These Beef Twists Are Great
- That’s the magic. The difference.
- The puff pastry crisps up nicely in the oven, and the beef makes a savory, hearty filling. The melted cheddar holds everything together and the egg gives the pastry a lovely golden finish.
- No complicated sauce or long list of seasonings needed.
- Ingredients do most of the work.
- That’s just what I want in a quick recipe.
Ingredients:
You will only need 4 ingredients:
- 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, defrosted
- 1 cup cooked seasoned ground meat
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar)
- 1 lg. egg
Remember to cool the cooked beef before adding it to the pastry. The filling, when warm, makes it difficult to twist and softens the dough.
How to Make Beef Puff Pastry Twists Recipe
- Heat oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a baking tray with baking paper.
- Dust a work surface with flour and place your thawed puff pastry on top. If necessary, roll the pastry out into a smooth rectangle.
- Spread the cooked ground beef on half the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges. Evenly sprinkle the cheddar over the beef.
- Fold the empty half of the pastry over the filling and gently press the edges together to seal everything inside.
- Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter cut the pastry into strips approx 1″ wide.
- Twist each strip 2 to 3 times. Put the twists on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them.
- Lightly brush the pastry with the beaten egg in a small bowl.
- Bake 15-20 minutes, or until twists puff up and are golden brown.
- Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.
- The filling remains hot so the short wait really does matter.
